A fun, fashionable resort with a prime location on the sugary shores of Maenam beach. Its 74 pool villas are tropical party pads, with sunny decks, private pools, huge bathrooms and lashings of colour. And the good times don’t stop there – expect beach barbecues, pool parties and sunset cocktails by the gallon.
The W’s beach is a beauty: a pale golden band sweeping around from Maenam to Bophut, lapped by the turquoise Gulf of Thailand. Other than that, there’s not a lot to see or do in the immediate area – no shops, restaurants or massage salons – but the hotel runs a complimentary shuttle bus three times a day to the Central Festival mall in Chaweng. The airport is around 30 minutes away by car.
Address: 4/1 Moo 1, Tambol Maenam, Koh Samui, Surat Thani 84330, Thailand.
Style & character
A cool contemporary escape with lashings of W-wow factor. Sink into a lily-pad booth sunken into an infinity pool at the Woo Bar, ride an inflatable unicorn at the pool or flop on a giant green beanbags on the blinding white beach. Wherever you decide to lounge expect to be accompanied by a thumping dance soundtrack.
Service & facilities
‘Whatever/Whenever’. So the W’s catchphrase goes and the preppy young staff do their best to make your whims happen (within legal confines of course). Scattered across the leafy grounds are a seaview gym, an azure-blue swimming pool, purple tennis courts and watersports centre (with complimentary paddle boards, kayaks and giant water balls).
Free daily fitness activities include body combat, water polo and sunset yoga. The Away Spa offers treatments ranging from traditional Thai massage to gold aloe vera body wraps to marine collagen cream facials, perfect for rehydrating after a day at the beach.
Private, spacious and sybaritic, almost all of the private villas are identical, with wooden decks and a private pool. Starting at a generous 163-square metres, all are, in fact, suites, with sassy interiors blending vaulted ceilings and blonde woods with curvaceous red sofas and coral-shaped lamps. Bathrooms come with gorgeous free-standing stone tubs, huge outdoor showers and Bliss amenities. Ignore the minibar and instead stop by one of the hotel’s ‘sweet spots’ for free ice-cream, chilled water and soft drinks.
Food & drink
The Woo Bar is the one you’ll want to Instagram, but the beachside SIP bar, with its thatched roof and palm-strung hammocks, makes for a lovely laid-back alternative. Breakfast is served at The Kitchen Table until a leisurely 11am. Combining buffet and à la carte options, you’ll find everything from dragon fruit smoothies to blueberry pancakes and Chinese dim sum.
The sleek Namu Japanese restaurant is popular with both guests and locals so don’t forget to book ahead – and look out for special events such as beach barbecues, jazz buffets and live music sets.
