Taylors Hill is a handsome 150-year-old former British planter’s home. Nestled among tea plantations and rolling windswept hills in the highlands above Kandy, this country mansion has just five rooms and is a perfect family getaway.
Located a couple of miles from Loolecondera estate, Sri Lanka’s oldest tea plantation, and an hour and a half out of Kandy, Taylors Hill offers stupendous views of the surrounding countryside, both from its sprawling gardens and very smart pool. For those who want to get away from everything, it’s simply perfect. Both the beautiful plantation and the adjoining tea factory are easily accessible by tuk-tuk.
Address: Pattiyagama Estate, Deltota, Kandy District, Sri Lanka.
Style & character
This handsome mansion, decked out in rich tapestries, well-restored antiques that enhance the colonial-era feel as well as new furnishings, sits in a large well-kept garden with neatly cropped lawns. While old-fashioned touches have been retained, the property is bright and airy, making for a broadly contemporary ambience. It’s a near-perfect marriage of history and modern elegance.
Service & facilities
Service is friendly and very professional and the facilities are excellent, especially for families. Besides the handsome pool, a tennis court, badminton court and croquet lawn, there’s also a billiard room, television room and games room for children. The hotel organises half-day tuk tuk tours to the Loolecondera tea plantation and factory. Bicycles are available and the area around the hotel is perfect for short and long walks.
The comfortable rooms are bright and airy with ample windows that guarantee plenty of light and excellent views across the surrounding hills. The beds are huge and comfortable and guests can sink into armchairs after a day’s walking. Two rooms have adjoining rooms for children. There’s no television or minibar, and air con is unnecessary given the area’s cool climate. The bathrooms have some retro fittings but showers are state of the art. Everything is clean and in perfect condition.
Food & drink
The set menu dinners – Western; Indian; Sri Lanka’s signature dish of rice and curry, with 10 options including pumpkin, mango, beetroot, banana flower and baby aubergine – are all excellent. Besides a wide selection of liquors and wines, Taylors Hill also offers 13 different types of tea. Guests may bring their own beverages to the dinner table or choose from the in-house wine list.
The lounge and the morning room are both suitable for a quiet pre-dinner drink. If the weather is good, honeymooners can enjoy a sumptuous lunch or dinner on the sundeck of the little pool house or in the garden.
